I.O.A. India

Indian Orthopaedic Association has a very long history, of having served the members by number of excellent activities, for the upliftment of the profession and its members. Organizing fellowships is one of the important activities. Many senior members have worked hard, to get them sponsored, by well wishers of the Association with a view to attain excellence in their chosen field. Members are requested to take advantage of these fellowships.

Indian Orthopaedic Association offers these fellowships to its members to help them visit various centres, attain training and attend conferences in India and Abroad.

Report from the Chairman, Inland Fellowship Committee

REPORT OF THE INLAND FELLOWSHIP COMMITTEE 2006 – 2007

Since taking over the Inland Fellowship Committee Chair, I have strived to bring complete transparency and democracy to the system of selection of fellows. During my tenure a rapid spurt in the growth of fellowships has occurred. From taking over mainly the J & J / Robert Roaf fellowship, we have had addition of the Dr. S.S. Babhulkar, the Dr. G.S. Kulkarni and the IOA – WOC- SICOT fellowships. Also added on are the IOA-Panacea Biotec and the INOR Research Grant awards and the Dr. Ashoke Sengupta Visiting Professorship. The Inland Fellowship office now looks like a real office with a lot of correspondence being exchanged with the applicants, selected fellows and the Inland fellowship committee! The process of getting completion reports from the fellows has also been streamlined.

Also these years have witnessed enhancement of the J & J fellowship grant by Johnson & Johnson to Rs. 50000/- making air travel possible on long laps of this fellowship.

JOHNSON & JOHNSON / ROBERT ROAF TRAVELING FELLOWSHIP

The selected fellows for this year were : Dr. Vinod Kumar, Dr. Lalit Maini and Dr. Sandeep Singh all from Delhi and Dr. Nitin Buddhadev of Morbi, Gujarat who was the Robert Roaf fellow.

They started their travel with the IOACON at Delhi and successively visited Chandigarh, Ahmedabad, Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkatta before returning to their home towns. All arrangements had been made for their smooth travel and visit to these centres. From their communications to me, they have had an exciting and rewarding trip and we await their detailed report. I thank the fellowship coordinators at different centres for having taken on the responsibility for making all arrangements for the fellows. The fellows completed their fellowship on the 9th Dec. 2006 at Kolkatta.

Dr. Narayana Acharya of Dharwad is this year’s Dr. Babhulkar fellow. He has commenced his fellowship with Dr. Sajan Hegde at Chennai.

THE IOA – PANACEA BIOTEC RESEARCH AWARD AND THE INOR RESEARCH GRANT

The IOA Panacea Biotec Research Grant has not been awarded this year due to lack of suitable applicants. Dr. Nishant Jain of Delhi has been awarded the INOR Research Grant Awardfor his project on “Development of instrumentation for minimally invasive technique of dynamic hip screw for intertrochanteric fracture fixation”. .

Dr. S.K. Saraf of Varanasi, recipient of the 2005 Panacea Biotec Research Grant for his project on “Biomimetic Synthesis of Collagen/ Gelatin Hydroxyapatite self assembly as potential bone graft material”, presented it at a special session held during the IOACON at Delhi. Last year at the Mumbai IOACON, Dr. Charanjeet Ajmani, INOR awardee 2003, Dr. Mohinder Kaushal, INOR awardee 2004 and Dr. Amit Rastogi, Pancea awardee, 2003, all presented their work at a special session for research.

THE DR. ASHOKE SENGUPTA VISITING PROFESSORSHIP

There have been no request from centres asking for the services of a visiting professor. Prof. Mukesh Kalra of Delhi has applied for the visiting professorship and his name has been included in the panel of visiting professors.

SUGGESTIONS FOR THE FUTURE

The marking system which has been laid out has a ceiling for the number of papers published or presented. Going through recent applications, one finds that many applicants have reached this ceiling limit and have papers in excess of this. To be fair to them, I proposed to the executive committee of IOA, that all papers should be given marks and the highest scorer be equated with the ceiling limit. The marks of the other applicants can be expressed as percentile of the highest scorer. This will be fair to all concerned. This amendment has been passed at the Delhi meeting of the executive committee.

Applications are invited for the 2007 Inland fellowships of the IOA. The last date for applications is 31st March 2007. Please forward applications in the prescribed format to :
